Three days is a proper long weekend on wheels. It is the shortest trip that comfortably reaches the far side of the country and comes back without a single frantic drive. Santo Domingo, the colonial capital, and the quieter south coast both open up once you have three days rather than one, because the driving spreads out and no single day has to carry the whole route.
A loose three-day itinerary
Think of it as three unhurried segments. The first day is the long leg out, west toward Santo Domingo or down along the coast, arriving with time for an evening walk. The middle day stays put and explores, whether that is the cobbled Zona Colonial, a stretch of the south shore, or a mix of both. The third day is the return, taken in the morning so the afternoon is a buffer rather than a deadline. Nothing about the plan is fixed, which is the point.

Pacing three days on the road
With three days the car earns its keep, and the pattern is relaxed: pick up on the first morning, return on the third. It arrives with a full tank and we top up the account when you bring it back, so fuel never interrupts the trip. Longer routes cross more toll points than a day trip does, so keep pesos in cash and watch the booth screen for the amount. If your weekend logically ends in Santo Domingo or another town, a one-way drop-off there saves the final drive back to Punta Cana.
Rates, protection and eligibility
The daily logic does not change with length: an economy car starts from around 15 USD a day and the three-day price is that rate confirmed at booking, with SUVs and premium models higher. Over three days the included cover does more work, from collision damage and third-party liability with a fixed excess to genuinely unlimited mileage, so a big loop costs no more in the car than a short hop. A refundable card hold serves as the deposit and is released once the car is back. Every driver must be 21 or older, pays a surcharge if under 25, and carries a license, a passport, and a credit card in the driver's name.

This is the second time we’ve rented a car in the DR. Auto Dominicana was by far the easiest to communicate with. They had easy to understand insurance packages. We rented a Jeep Cherokee and it was clean and reliable. Pick up and drop off was easy to do at the airport.
I would definitely recommend this rental place. With so many scary tourists horrible stories go here. I’m from Houston. They drop off to you and pick up from you. They stayed in contact before drop and before pick up. While I documented any prior damages to the car, the guy talked me through them. Saying yes this scratch was there etc.
