Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic and, for most Punta Cana travelers, a two to two-and-a-half hour drive west along the Autovia del Coral. A rental car is the simplest way to reach the city and the coast in between, and to choose your own hours instead of a fixed tour schedule. Economy models start around 15 US dollars a day, with the exact rate shown when you pick your dates. Every booking includes collision and liability coverage with a fixed excess, unlimited mileage, and delivery in the Punta Cana and Bavaro area, with the capital and other regions arranged on request.
What to see and how the car fits
The heart of the city is the Zona Colonial, the oldest surviving European settlement in the Americas. Here you find the Catedral Primada de America, the Alcazar de Colon, and Calle Las Damas, the first paved street in the New World. Along the water runs the Malecon seafront, and on the eastern side of the river sit Los Tres Ojos and the Colonial Gate. A car gets you to each district quickly, but once you are inside the Colonial Zone the streets are narrow and made for walking, so you park and continue on foot.
Driving and parking in the city
Santo Domingo has heavy traffic, especially at rush hour, so plan arrivals and departures with a little margin. Paid parking lots sit around the edge of the Zona Colonial, and leaving the car in one of them is far easier than looking for space in the old grid. The Autovia del Coral itself is a toll road, and tolls in the Dominican Republic are paid in cash pesos only, with the amount shown on the booth screen. Keep some small pesos ready before you set off.
Booking, documents, and one-way trips
To drive you need a valid driver's license, your passport, and a credit card in the driver's name. The minimum age is 21, with a small surcharge for drivers under 25. When you book, a hold is placed on the credit card depending on the car and coverage chosen, and it is released after you return the vehicle.

I would definitely recommend this rental place. With so many scary tourists horrible stories go here. I’m from Houston. They drop off to you and pick up from you. They stayed in contact before drop and before pick up. While I documented any prior damages to the car, the guy talked me through them. Saying yes this scratch was there etc.
