Most visitors to Punta Cana come for a single week, and a week is exactly the amount of time a car turns from a convenience into the thing that shapes the whole holiday. Seven days is enough to build a proper rhythm: arrival and settling in, a couple of slow beach days, one big day trip, an afternoon in a real town, and a last morning before the flight. Economy cars start around 15 US dollars a day with the exact rate confirmed at booking, and taking the vehicle for the full seven days brings the effective daily cost below the day-by-day price.
A week that plans itself
Picture the seven days laid out. Day one the car meets you at the airport with a full tank, so the transfer haggle never happens and you drive straight to the hotel. The next two days stay local, the beach in the morning and a short hop to a beach bar for the evening. Midweek is for the big trip, either the colonial streets of Santo Domingo or a boat morning out to Saona, both far easier with your own wheels to the departure point. Later in the week take a town day, Higuey or a smaller inland spot, for the market and a lunch that no resort buffet matches. The final morning is yours until the car goes back at the airport.

The weekly booking includes CDW and collision cover, liability with a fixed excess, and unlimited mileage, so a long drive to Santo Domingo costs no more than a run to the supermarket. A card hold applies for the rental, based on the car and coverage, and is released after you return it. Drivers must be 21, with a small surcharge under 25, and you will need a licence, passport and a credit card in the driver's name. Tolls on the way west are paid in cash pesos, the amount shown on the booth screen.

This is the second time we’ve rented a car in the DR. Auto Dominicana was by far the easiest to communicate with. They had easy to understand insurance packages. We rented a Jeep Cherokee and it was clean and reliable. Pick up and drop off was easy to do at the airport.
I would definitely recommend this rental place. With so many scary tourists horrible stories go here. I’m from Houston. They drop off to you and pick up from you. They stayed in contact before drop and before pick up. While I documented any prior damages to the car, the guy talked me through them. Saying yes this scratch was there etc.
