Basic Rules of Traffic in the Dominican Republic: A Guide for Safe Driving

Introduction

The roads of the Dominican Republic can be exciting and adventurous, but safety should always be a top priority. If you plan on renting a car in the Dominican Republic, it is important to be well-informed about the rules of traffic in the country. In this article, we will discuss the basic rules that will help you enjoy your journey and ensure safety on the roads of the Dominican Republic.

Keep Right

In the Dominican Republic, traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road. Overtaking is done on the left side. Keep in mind that the steering wheel is located on the left side of the vehicle, which may be unusual for some drivers.

Observe Speed Limit

Adhering to speed limits is mandatory. The maximum speed limit is usually 80 km/h on highways and 40 km/h in urban areas. However, note that certain road sections may have their own speed limits, so pay attention to road signs.

Wear Seatbelts

All occupants of a vehicle must wear seatbelts. It is the law, and it must be followed. It is recommended to wear seatbelts for both the driver and all passengers.

Yield the Right of Way

The “yield the right of way” rule applies in the Dominican Republic. Yield to pedestrians, merging vehicles, and vehicles entering the main road. Be attentive and cautious at intersections and pedestrian crossings.

Alcohol Consumption Restrictions

The Dominican Republic has strict regulations regarding alcohol consumption by drivers. The permissible blood alcohol concentration should not exceed 0.05%. Consuming alcohol while driving can result in arrest, fines, and license suspension.

Motorcycles and Mopeds

Motorcycles and mopeds are widely used in the Dominican Republic. Exercise caution when overtaking or changing lanes near them. Ensure that motorcycle and moped riders also adhere to the rules of traffic.

Stay Vigilant on the Road

Always remain attentive and vigilant while driving. Yield to pedestrians, follow traffic signs, and obey the rules. Exercise caution on the roads, particularly in areas with poor lighting and sharp turns.

Conclusion

Having knowledge of the basic rules of traffic in the Dominican Republic is an integral part of a safe and enjoyable journey. Remember, these rules will help you prevent potential mishaps and ensure safety on the road. Use this information when renting a car in the Dominican Republic and enjoy your adventures in this beautiful country.

It was a great experience to hire our car here. The communication in English was good, they were on time on appointments, and when the engine light in the dashboard turned orange and we were on the other side of the country, they fixed a mechanic that came by our hotel there. One advice when renting a car in Dominican Republic: pick a high car - the speed bumbs are ridiculously high and there are holes in the roads too.
